What does P4 Chinese actually test?
Knowing this helps you judge what a tutor or centre should focus on. In the 2023-onwards P4 school papers we hold:
- Reading comprehension: about 30% of written marks.
- Passage cloze (短文填空): about 20%.
- Word pairing and word choice: about 30% together.
- Picture composition (看图作文): usually a separate paper, typically at least 80 characters.
Most P4 marks depend on knowing words in context: recognising them, choosing between similar ones, and reading them in a passage. Composition is the part where feedback from a person matters most. See the P4 Chinese guide and the P4 composition guide.
When is P4 tuition worth it?
- Composition: your child needs someone to read and correct their writing.
- Behind: they can't follow lessons, and a teacher needs to find the gaps.
- Speaking: they need speaking confidence and conversation.
- A person helps: they work better with a regular appointment and someone they report to.
When is practice at home enough?
- They follow lessons but forget words. Most P4 marks are word and reading questions.
- You want them to try real past-year P4 school papers, one section at a time. Free P4 papers
- You want the P4 听写 (spelling) lists with pinyin, English meanings and read-aloud. Free P4 lists
- You don't read Chinese and want English explanations of wrong picks. That's part of Mattie & Me's paid Learning plan. How Learning works
