- More writing. Written comprehension questions jump to about 22% of written marks, up from about 4% at P4.
- New section types. Language use and complete-the-dialogue sections appear in most P5 papers.
- Different compositions. P4 is mostly picture composition. P5 usually gives a titled topic, often about how an experience changed you, with prompts to guide the story.
- Feelings words matter. The most-tested P5 words in our papers include 安慰 (to comfort), 鼓励 (to encourage), 烦恼 (worried), 惭愧 (ashamed) and 珍惜 (to treasure). They show up in comprehension and composition alike. See the P5 Chinese page.
How should my child revise with P5 papers?
1. One section at a time, starting with reading and written comprehension, which carry about half the written marks.
2. Practise short written responses in full sentences, using words from the passage.
3. Keep a list of missed words and come back to them over the next days.
4. Get compositions read by a person. We show the composition task, but we don't mark writing. See Chinese tuition.
