What does P5 Chinese actually test?
Knowing this helps you judge what a tutor or centre should focus on. In the 2023-onwards P5 school papers we hold:
- Reading comprehension (multiple choice): about 26% of written marks.
- Written comprehension questions (理解问答): about 22%, up from about 4% at P4.
- Passage cloze (短文填空): about 21%.
- Language use (语文应用): about 20%.
- Composition (作文): a separate paper, 40 marks where printed, usually a titled topic with prompts.
P5 is the year written work grows the most, so a good class should spend real time on written comprehension and composition, not only worksheets. See the P5 Chinese guide and the P5 revision papers guide.
When is P5 tuition worth it?
- Written comprehension: your child struggles to write clear responses, the biggest new demand at P5.
- Composition: P5 moves from picture stories to titled topics, and writing needs a reader's feedback.
- Behind: they can't follow lessons, and someone needs to find the gaps.
- A person helps: they work better with a regular appointment and someone they report to.
